Anyone interested in showing their beers at the Washington County Fair?
Here's your chance to add to your collection of ribbons! I judge the competition,
so it's in my interests to stimulate some competition. Let's be honest, I want
to sample some good beer that night! There are usually no more than a
half-dozen entrants, so you've got a good shot at winning something.
Go here for the exhibitor information:

Anyone interested in making mead on August 7 in Burnsville? The Weiland Brau and meadhaus is willing to host the annual mead day event this year.

Found a great write-up about the history of Weizen (Wheat) Beer. It's definitely the right time of year for this great style of beer, in Germany and any where else warm weather and good beer are found. Here's an excerpt about Reinheitsgebot (the Beer Purity Law):
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Weizenbier was a privilege of the nobility. The Reinheitsgebot of 1516 was not a control relating to purity of beer for the masses, but rather a mandate to protect this "refined" style of beer for the nobility in Bavaria. No private brewer was allowed to brew beer with wheat, be it in the towns or in the country, even for home consumption, - only the nobility.
Enjoy the article and enjoy a Weizen!

I had a great 40-minute visit last night with Bob, Renee and their dog,
who were all in Bob's hospital room. Bob had just come back from
enjoying the great weather outside. The progress he is making is
obvioius compared to the last time I saw him. He is vocalizing and
forming a few simple words, and he has gone from walking with a brace to
climbing stairs. The bad news is that he has lost the vision in his
left eye, but Bob indicated he hadn't given up hope at getting some
vision back. It's clear that Bob understands most of what you say, and
he still has that great smile.
Bob's "beerque" is still sitting on his windowsill, and it cheers him up
to look at it. Renee said some people have expressed concern about the
beer getting light-struck. I guess that's what you get when your
friends are beer judges.
Bob will be taking a trip home this weekend and doing an overnight next
weekend. He'll be seeing his grandchild for the first time, who was
born shortly after Bob had the stoke. The best time to visit him might
be weekday evenings. I've found a 6:30-7 arrival seems to work fine.
Bethesda Rehab Hospital is just one block straight north from the state
capitol. Bob is in room 440.
The big news is that Bob may be heading home around August 1, and
perhaps even a bit sooner. Renee said they're thankful for little
things. Bob had recently returned from a flight to India (not a good
place to be sick) and he had the stroke at the house, a half hour before
they were due to head off for a highway trip with Bob driving.

Guys, Gals, Fellow Beer Lovers,
Let me know if I can assist with the food preparation or beer serving. I
have helped cut, slice, shuffle, plan, BBQ, and baled, and swatted
mosquitoes at many previous Cocato events and truly look forward to a event
without any rain (repeat a few times please). I can provide stuff, time,
effort, funds, and mop time and could also bring a fogger. Likely there is
a large outside BBQ area that is fueled with charcoal? How about keeping it
simple with a Chicken and BBQ Sauce, Brats, Sauer Kraut, Onions, Relish,
Mustard, Coleslaw - Corn on the Cob menu? It is the cheapest way to go,
provides great fun, takes about an hour, and everything is ready at the same
time. Now a whole pig is also nice but you be the judge.
We also have a 5 tap club cooler and gas system that can easily appear.
Anyone have any beer to cool?
What about games? Maybe "butt-darts" is out but I really like the thought
of "Fire Jenga.."
When are folks planning on attending.
Lastly, there is that contest that I earlier boasted about; "Name That
Style!" Is anyone up to the challenge on Friday evening? It would be a
great opportunity to have your best beers "ripped" by the best brewers? It
would also be fun to share a few beers and to get to know some of the other
party goers.
So that's all that is fit to print. See you in about 8 days.

Sorry for the long silence...things have been pretty hectic here since
the brewery equipment showed up about a month ago. Since a lot of people
have been asking what's going on, I figured I'd try to bring everybody
up to date.
The brewery is all set up and working (pretty much, anyway) and in fact
we poured our first beer last Thursday! The Blonde Ale (really a
Kölsch-style beer) is on tap here at the brewery and at a bunch of
locations in the Twin Cities. I just filtered the Amber Ale (really a
Düsseldorf-style Altbier) today; I'm hoping to keg it tomorrow and have
it on tap this weekend.
Our big Grand Opening bash will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July
29-31. There are more details in the article below. Paris and I and our
eight cats will have moved into our house in nearby Deer Park by then.
I hope to see you at the Grand Opening! Let me know if you need
directions, maps, accommodations, etc. Email or call me on 715-263-4333.
have fun

P.S. Members of the brewing community: stay tuned for a special
announcement, forthcoming as soon as I get the boss to agree to it.

William Kuether Brewing Grand Opening
By the time you read this, William Kuether Brewing Company of Clear
Lake, Wisconsin will have tapped their first keg of 'Sconnie Tall Blonde
Ale, a Kölsch-style beer. And while you're welcome to come by and have a
pint any time, be sure not to miss the big three-day Grand Opening party
July 29-31, starting at 4:00pm each day. There will be live music
provided by The Dukes on Friday and Saturday, a food booth serving
burgers, brats, and the like, and a volleyball court for the more
athletically-inclined.
Brewer Richard Stueven, late of Egan Brewing Company, will be serving up
his latest creations along with the Tall Blonde Ale:
'Sconnie Rustic Trail Amber Ale (a Düsseldorf-style Altbier),
'Sconnie Pale Ale (a remarkably hoppy American Pale Ale), and
'Sconnie Badger Brown Ale (a roasty Dark Mild).
The ingredients for a batch of the Princess of Darkness Porter are also
lurking in the brewery, waiting for a slot in the schedule.
William Kuether Brewing Company is located in Clear Lake's old Village
Hall. This historic building, which over the years has served as a movie
theater, ballroom, library, and convention center, was scheduled to be
demolished last year. Many of the townsfolk were upset at this idea and
demanded that Something Be Done.
Enter company founder and good citizen Bill Kuether, who purchased the
vacant lumberyard across the street, and traded that land to the village
in exchange for their old hall. Bill had spent many years at the
family's beer distributorship in Minnesota, and had become intrigued by
the idea of brewing quality beer for the residents of northwestern
Wisconsin and the Twin Cities area. He renovated the old Village Hall,
left the family business, and bought the brewing equipment from a
defunct brewpub in Washington.
Now everybody in Clear Lake is excited about their new brewery, the new
Village Hall has been built on the site of the old lumberyard, the
village is renovating their fire department next door to the brewery,
and there's a whole new sense of pride in this small town. It's amazing
what a little beer can do.
So swing by and sample some 'Sconnie!

Hi, I was looking back at the previously announced styles (shown below) and was wondering if the Cask Ale contest was still on for the campout? It wasn't mentioned in Curt's e-mail listing the styles.
Thanks,
Susan

Subject: [phc-club] Campout Styles
The camp-out styles will be open lager, open ales, open meads & open Belgian beer. They will be judged in the best of show format. The samples can come from kegs, growlers, bottles, etc. Samples will be labeled as to what type of beer/mead they are.
I would like to see an experimental open cask ale category also. All the details to come later. Hopefully, this will get more brewers involved. I have a BJCP type event planned also, stay tuned.
