Great American Beer Festival
Join us for the country's biggest celebration of all things ale -
The Great American Beer Festival. We follow 3 brewers as
they travel to Denver, CO to put their beer against the best
in hopes of winning a gold medal.
Check your local listings to be sure...

I suppose that serving Good O'l Swill beer is cheaper than providing
customers a little better quality. Hell, why couldn't they just do the same
with food? Pay some big package producer to deliver the meals ready to go.
Just think of all the kitchen expenses they could save!

Hello homebrewers,
Does anyone have any left over hop vines I could use for an event I'll be at this weekend?
Barb and I will have a MhBA booth, no homebrew..., at the Harvest Howl in Forest Lake, see below...

Club members and friends. I was a little concerned with the request
from the Beer is Great festival organizers and the enthusiastic
agreement to participate from a few club members. Although the laws may
have changed or been re-worded, I wanted to check with a professional
and felt his opinions are worth sharing. As they say, a word to the
wise is sufficient. No mentions about the non-wise. Read on and make
your own decide.

Here is my original question to Dave:
Our clubs (St. Paul and MHBA) were asked to participate at a beer
tasting event that will occur at the Saints stadium. I was very
concerned when I heard they were asking us to pour homebrew at their
"Beer is Good" event.
Could you please provide a few words of wisdom that I could share
with the homebrew clubs regarding serving homebrew amongst
commercial breweries.
Dave's response (with permission to reprint). I'm not a lawyer, nor do
I play one on tv. Just off the top of my head:
1) Your brand is not registered in the state of Minnesota, nor could it
be as you don't hold a Brewer's Notice.
2) The beer was produced in a location that is not subject to Health
Code inspections.
3) My understanding of homebrewing laws are a certain quantity of beer
can be produced for consumption at home. In the strictest sense, this
prohibits you from even taking beer to a club meeting.
4) You have no liquor liability insurance. You could be sued by
someone that was intoxicated at the event, and without insurance that
could spell disaster.
I'm shocked and a bit concerned that they requested this of your clubs.
This event was thrown together in a month, and everytime I hear
something new about it, I just shake my head.

Hey beer fans,
Thanks to all that took part in the brunch this past weekend. We had a great turnout, hope you all enjoyed it. Look forward to pre-Vikings brunch before any home game........
As the weather turns colder, richer beer tastes better.....so we brewed you a special treat
We will release Chocolate Porter this Thursday 10/02. This is an English style porter that was made with the addition of a generous amount of chocolate at the end of the boil. (Most was semi-sweet so don't expect "Hershey's").
Stop by the Town Hall Brewery (1430 Washington Ave south) and try a pint of Choco Porter for just $1 from 5-6, this Thursday.
Go Twins!
Mike
P.S. We only have about 10 pint club memberships left....get yours before the last one goes
Howdy.
Talked to Minnesota Harvest. We are set for buying unpaturized apple juice by the gallon. Same price as last year - $2.90/gal. (I think that is correct).
My intent is to pick up the cider on the day of the November meeting (Nov. 8, 3:30-5:30 at Hops in Edin Prairie - or so says the calendar).
Get me you orders my Nov. 3rd and we should be good.
Next - Cider Pressing. I will be pressing again this year at Webber's Orchard just south of Prior Lake on October 25th. Mark your calendars appropriately.
Final details later (eg, map, times, cost ($2/gal), etc.)
TTFN,
Mark

Beth and I are planning on coming up too - is there one hotel that you are

Curt,
I am the Judging Coordinator for the Hoppy Halloween Challenge. We try to
arrange a judging session on Friday night and make every effort to have
beers that out-of-town folks can judge. I'll be sending out a call for
judges soon. Let us know what you can judge, we'll do our best. It would
be fun to have a bunch of visitors for the Friday night judging/party and
the BOS on Saturday.
Karl.

Susan, or whoever - will there be any judging on the Friday before the BOS?
Just wondering if we would be able to join in the judging. I may be busy
with work, but if I free up I would like to help judge.

Competition minded folks,
I will be delivering my entries in person for the Hoppy Halloween
competition in Fargo. I will be driving up sometime between October 4th
and 10th. If anyone would like me to deliver their entries please let
me know soon. This would be a good chance for people to geographically
expand their competition experience if you are interested in doing so.
This competition only requires 2 bottles per entry (it's usually 3
bottles). A nominal handling fee of 50 cents per entry is requested to
help with travel expenses (gas and a couple beers).
If you have never entered a competition or have questions about it, just
ask. Many people, myself included, would be glad to help.
What you need to do:
1. Fill out an entry form for each entry.
2. Have your bottle labels attached to the appropriate bottles with
rubber bands.
3. Have your entries neatly boxed in 6 packs or cases (depending on how
many you have).
4. Have your entry fees (per competition rules) in a clearly marked
envelope with your entries.
5. Submit the handling fee in cash/coin. Handling fee maximum is $5.00.
So if you have over 10 entries all I request is $5.00.
6. Get your neatly packed labeled entries, completed entry forms, entry
fees and handling fees to me by Friday October 3rd.
You may want to include a list of your entries to help the people who
have to log them in. On the list include your name, club, and BJCP
category/subcategory of each entry.
Two options for getting me the entries:
Deliver to my house 1472 Como Ave, St. Paul (651) 644-6098. Call or
email to setup home delivery.
If it is more convenient, they could be dropped off at my work in Edina
(near Hwy 100 and 494). Email or call to setup work delivery.
Other arrangements may be made, just contact me.
For more information on the competition go to:

Well, sort of:
The Map Room has acquired a couple of _kegs_
of Grottenbier, the beer Peter Celis brewed in
Belgium after leaving Texas. Previously only available
in bottles, the beer is a spiced, relatively strong
brown ale. From rarebeer.com:
