Get Surly!
September 21, 2012

Greetings!

SurlyFest is Here!

Guten news folks - SurlyFest is here! Tomorrow, Saturday, September 22, we're going to be celebrating the release of SurlyFest, our Oktoberfest-style bier. If you got tickets, you can look forward to SurlyFest on tap as well as a few other favorites and some event specials, food from Aki's Backstube-German Style Baking, GASTROTRUCK, Natedogs, Rusty Taco, Smack Shack and Vellee Deli, and music from The Goondas, Koo Koo Kanga Roo and Abstract Artimus.

Shirts and posters with this year's SurlyFest artwork (below), designed by local artist Brent Schoonover, will be on sale. He's done a great job with our 2012 SurlyFest logo and he's also illustrated our 2012 Darkness bottle, which is going to make you howl. You can check out more of his work here.

If that wasn't enough, we'll also be hosting our Loppet Surly Trail Run with The Loppet Foundation.  The race has something for everyone, a 5k race, 13.1k race and a half marathon, all running through Theodore Wirth Park. Runners set off at 9am and those participants of legal drinking age will get to enjoy a nice cold Surly after their adventure. Big thanks to all the volunteers who'll be helping out with the race and best of luck to those running. A couple lucky runners will win tickets to SurlyFest and we (via applause-o-meter) will be crowning the Surly-est Runner at the end of the day. What is the Surly-est runner you ask? Well, it's the person who gets most shredded, bloodied and/or beat up out on the course, of course. The race is filled to the brim this year, so make sure to register early next year. FYI, If you pass Omar during the run, you have a far lower chance of getting the free tickets.

(We'd also like to thank you all for being so patient during our technical problems when SurlyFest tickets went on sale. Don't worry - we fixed the bugs and you can be sure things will go smoothly for future Surly ticket sales).

HELL Forever

It's great to celebrate the seasons with a seasonal beer, and for a few years, we've been celebrating summer with our German Lager, Hell. My Mom got snarly because she could only get it in the summer, so we decided to brew it year-round. She also threatened not to baby-sit anymore, so that made it an easy decision. Well, now you don't have to wait - we're adding Hell to our year-round roster of beers. Seriously, you can now add Hell to your tailgate beer list, you can bring in the New Year with a Hell and you'll still be able to enjoy it through the summer. So bring on eternal Hell... cheers!

P.S. Mom, I need help watching the kids during the Wet release. Deal?

Get WET

Freshly picked Simcoe hops were delivered at the start of the month and we got straight to it, working through the night to make our wet-hop IPA. We'll be releasing Wet at the new Icehouse Bar in South Minneapolis on Monday, September 24. Pouring starts at 6:00pm and it'll be $5 for 12oz of Wet. Cynic, Furious and Bender will also be on tap for $6 a pint. To complement the release, the Icehouse is also running some Surly food pairings: Bender-braised beef with dark spices, Cynic with rabbit tacos and Wet with bratwurst and black mustard.

Until then, check out this video of wet-hops being processed. You can smell 'em from here. (Due to the large amount of tanks it takes to brew Wet, we decided to brew less this year so we could keep up with the demand of our other core beers, so grab it when you see it!)

SGAD Update: Still Givin' A HUGE Damn

Surly Gives A Damn keeps Giving A Damn! Our community outreach program is going stronger than ever in 2012. We've just wrapped up helping 363 Days' Sandwich Project make 1,200 sandwiches for a local homeless food shelf. Our awesome volunteers made the sandwiches in just 54 minutes, which is about 22 sandwiches a minute. That's gotta be a record, right?

Next up on the agenda, winterizing (and pulling more buckthorn) our adopted section of the Greenway (Chowen to Dean Parkway). We're gonna need 50 vols to help, on Tuesday, October 9 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Sign-up for this project will be posted on Facebook and the SGAD site on Thursday, September 27.

Thanks for all your Damn help!

Autumn Brew Review Recap - Thanks For The Votes!

The Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild's Autumn Brew Review is always a favorite for us but this year had to be one of the best. The sun was shining, there were more breweries and brewpubs than ever pouring, and we had a blast. Our head brewer Todd got a lot of compliments for his event specials, including his Cacao Bender and Brettwagon. But the biggest compliment for us was receiving the 'Brewery/Brewpub of the Fest' Award. So that's cool.

Still Fueling The Surly-est Girls In Town

We're happy to announce that we've renewed our support for the Minnesota Rollergirls 2012/13 season. We'll be pouring Cynic, Hell and Bender throughout the season at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul. Check out their schedule here to find out when you can cheer on the girls, with a Surly in hand.
