Supporting beer drinkers and craft brewers, one beer at a time.
Odell Mountain Standard is Back!
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1102.jpg>
The latest truck from Odell Brewing Company brought another exceptional beer
from Alferd Packer's favorite state.
I am overcome with joy to announce the re-release of Mountain Standard
Double Black IPA in 4-packs!
Mountain Standard is the most unique black IPA I've ever had, with a
beautiful chocolatey malt base complimented by a big citrus hop kick. Think
of those chocolate oranges you got in your stocking as a kid and add beery
goodness with 9.5% ABV. To that I say: shpadoinkle!
It's in stock now. -Bryan

Alaskan Winter is in stock!
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1103.jpg>
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. This Alaskan bottle does not
say Winter!
Denial aside, we just received 6 packs of our best selling seasonal beer of
all time.
Alaskan Winter is a unique, brilliant beer. It is brewed with locally
harvested Spruce tips, which lend a light blueberry/raspberry spice flavor
to the caramel base. It is masterfully brewed, and a big reason why I think
Alaskan is one of the nation's best breweries. You need to try this beer!

Tonight - Nosferatu tasting!
Spooky Fancy Friday - win prizes, sample free beer!
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1106.jpg>
Tonight is going to be pretty crazy. Fancy Friday, Spooky Edition is going
on all day, but the real festivities start at 6. We'll be hosting Brent from
Great Lakes Brewing Company as he taps and pours a keg of Nosferatu, a hoppy
imperial red that weighs in at 8% ABV. Yes, we are paying for a keg of
Nosferatu and sampling it away for free! That's how we roll.
We'll be dressed up, and you are invited to dress up in your spooky finest,
too!
Cost: FREE
Time: All day, but sampling starts at 6.
Place: The Firk.
Fine Print: You don't need a costume to attend. But you know you want to.
We will be awarding a $50 Four Firkins gift card to what we deem the best
costume, and a $25 Pizza Luce gift card to the runner up. Also, anyone
dressed as the classic Nosferatu will get a free beer!
Homebrewers: FREE empties!
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1113.jpg>
Please don't make us build a temple out of empty beer bottles again.
Homebrewers, we have a deal for you: drive your favorite method of hauling
beer bottles over here and have them... for FREE!
We do heroic amounts of free beer sampling, which results in quite a few
empties. If you need free bottles, stop on by and just ask. We have 22oz
bombers, 12oz bottles, and 750ml cork and cage style bottles.
Also, don't think you need to wait for us to send out a call - we usually
have empties on hand all the time. So just stop on by anytime and pick some
up.
Lakefront Pumpkin... Spirit?
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1107.jpg>
At the Firkins, we do not carry cheap booze. We do carry premium spirits if
they have a connection to breweries.
Great Lakes Distillery has just produced Pumpkin Seasonal Spirit, a beer
that has been distilled (to 45%) from Lakefront's Pumpkin Lager Beer.
We are proud to announce we have procured a small amount, and we are pretty
sure your Halloween will be ruined if you don't get a bottle. Pumpkin pie
whiskey... yes, please!
-Bryan
*We also have a small amount of the base Pumpkin Lager beer in stock too!
The coolest Belgian beer deal ever!
<http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs039/1102140918849/img/1114.jpg>
You have chosen... wisely.
We have received a really special offer from our Maredsous distributor - if
you buy a 30 liter keg of Maredsous Brune (8% Belgian Abbey Dubbel) or
Maredsous Blonde
(6% Belgian Blonde) you will get six handmade clay goblets!
These goblets are the real deal; they look like something monks would have
used in the middle ages. Perfect for your debaucherous lifestyle!
If you don't have the European tap hook up for it, we'll let you have one
for a free rental, so you don't need to pay a rental fee to get your
attachment. (You will have to pay a deposit, which will be fully refunded on
return.)
The Brune is $218.99, and the Blonde is $193.99. 30 liters is approximately
7.9 gallons.
Bottom line, you get:
*30 liter keg
*Free rental on keg adapter or pump
*Six awesome clay goblets
*All for the price of a regular keg
I declare this the best deal on a Belgian keg ever!

I'll admit we are pretty proud of our music video, Zum Zum Zum. We think
it's the best thing since the polio vaccine. It's from a 1914 piece of sheet
music commissioned by the Minneapolis Brewing Company, which later became
Grain Belt. It's bound to become #1 on iTunes.
I'm not outright saying this will cure disease or anything, but I've heard
reports.
We hope you'll enjoy this with a good beer in hand!

Fellow homebrewers:
Beth and I are hosting a music party this Saturday, Oct 10 at our house featuring Mick Sterling and The Irresistibles. If you have not heard them yet - they are an amazing Twin Cities 9-piece Soul Review combo! two horns, a hammond organ, plus the regular complement of guitar, bass, and drums - and three lead vocalists featuring Mick Sterling! (Formerly of Mick Sterling and The Stud Brothers.)
BBQ and pot luck begins at 5:30pm - music is 6:30-9:30pm.
We will have a bonfire and jam session afterwards. Homebrew is welcome! I have the club jockey box, so bring kegs if you got em, but any kind of vessel will work!
Contact me if you're interested and I'll send you the details!
Should be a blast!
Al Boyce
Please note: This is a private party, in our private home. This party is NOT a business nor is it a business related activity. It is simply a gathering of our friends and guests to enjoy live music, fellowship, food (a potluck) and fun. It is officially free (or else it might be considered a business), although voluntary contributions are accepted on behalf of the artists. 100% of all contributions go directly to the performers. Subject: [mnbrewers] BJCP Exam Prep Class - 10/4
Importance: High
The next BJCP Exam Prep class starts on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 6:30
pm. I have had a few people decide that this isn't the right time for them
to take it, so I have a few open seats. I know this is short notice.
The classes will be every Thursday from 6:30 pm and going until 10:30 pm (or
later) for 11 weeks. We will be covering the material that is in the BJCP
exams, including: the various styles of beer, how to fill out judging
sheets, brewing ingredients, brewing techniques, brewing history, etc. A
large portion of this class involves sampling various beers, so a designated
driver to pick you up after class is recommended. This class requires a lot
of participation and each person in the class will be required to give a
presentation on a selected topic. You will also be required to bring
selected beers to certain classes. For most people this runs about $150+
during the class.
The focus of this class is to prepare people for the Beer Judging
Certification Program online & tasting exams (scheduled for December 16th)
and to teach them how to become beer judges. Although other topics are
covered, this is really the purpose for the class. If you feel that you are
going to miss more than 3 classes or you are not interested in taking the
BJCP exam (or in judging beers), this is not the class for you. There are
only 12 seats available for any BJCP exam. First priority is given to
people who are taking this class, so it is very important that you are not
taking a seat if you do not want to take the exam.
You need to be a current member of the Minnesota Home Brewers Association to
take this class.
The fee for the class is $100. Please email me (not to the list), if you
are interested. Thanks.

end of the day. What is the Surly-est runner you ask? Well, it's the person
who gets most shredded, bloodied and/or beat up out on the course, of
course. The race is filled to the brim this year, so make sure to register
early next year. FYI, If you pass Omar during the run, you have a far lower
chance of getting the free tickets.
(We'd also like to thank you all for being so patient during our technical
problems when SurlyFest tickets went on sale. Don't worry - we fixed the
bugs and you can be sure things will go smoothly for future Surly ticket
sales).
HELL Forever
It's great to celebrate the seasons with a seasonal beer, and for a few
years, we've been celebrating summer with our German Lager, Hell. My Mom got
snarly because she could only get it in the summer, so we decided to brew it
year-round. She also threatened not to baby-sit anymore, so that made it an
easy decision. Well, now you don't have to wait - we're adding Hell to our
year-round roster of beers. Seriously, you can now add Hell to your tailgate
beer list, you can bring in the New Year with a Hell and you'll still be
able to enjoy it through the summer. So bring on eternal Hell... cheers!
P.S. Mom, I need help watching the kids during the Wet release. Deal?
Get WET
Freshly picked Simcoe hops were delivered at the start of the month and we
got straight to it, working through the night to make our wet-hop IPA. We'll
be releasing Wet at the new

at 6:00pm and it'll be $5 for 12oz of Wet. Cynic, Furious and Bender will
also be on tap for $6 a pint. To complement the release, the Icehouse is
also running some Surly food pairings: Bender-braised beef with dark spices,
Cynic with rabbit tacos and Wet with bratwurst and black mustard.

always a favorite for us but this year had to be one of the best. The sun
was shining, there were more breweries and brewpubs than ever pouring, and
we had a blast. Our head brewer Todd got a lot of compliments for his event

compliment for us was receiving the 'Brewery/Brewpub of the Fest' Award. So
that's cool.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Summit to open Tap Room at its St. Paul brewery
ST. PAUL, Minn. - (Sept. 19, 2012) - Summit Brewing Company will start Tap
Room hours at its brewery "Ratskeller" on Fridays from 3-8 p.m., beginning
Sept. 28. The Tap Room opening will feature a half-barrel of Export Stout
from the pilot brewery and music from Hotpants DJs. Barrio will be selling
tacos on Summit's patio.
"As St. Paul's first tap room, we're excited to continue our focus on the
community and bring more people into the brewery to experience what Summit
is all about," said Mark Stutrud, Summit's founder. "Tap rooms are a step in
the right direction for Minnesota breweries; it's a return to tradition and
historical experiences."
All of Summit's current beers will be available in the Tap Room as well as
cask-conditioned and specialty beers made with the brewery's pilot system.
The brewery's patio space above the Mississippi bluffs will be open during
public Tap Room hours, weather permitting. Food trucks will be parked in the
Summit lot and will be announced weekly via Summit's website and social
media accounts. Summit will also add tours at 1 p.m. on Fridays, which will
begin on a date to be announced later.
The Ratskeller space is currently offered twice per week to community and
nonprofit groups, and by limiting the Tap Room hours to Fridays, Summit will
continue that community-focused culture.
For more information as the taproom opening approaches, please visit

Hello Homebrewer's of MN-
We just received our limited supply of Fresh Citra hops. It looks like we
are going to have 10-15 pounds extra. If anyone is interested, come on in.
They will probably only stay good for a couple of days.
Please let your clubs know!
Questions can come to me.
