Subject: Still Looking for judges for the 3rd Annual Lucette Winter Homebrew Competition
Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2014 09:38:34 -0600
Judges,
On
Feb. 22nd we will be hosting our 3rd annual Lucette Winter Home Brew
Competition! My name is
Jon
Christiansen and I will, again, be the organizer of this home brew
competition. I have hosted a variety
of
beer competitions and this one is slowly gaining popularity. Last
year we had just under 50 entries and
we
hope to get closer to 100 this year. The judging all takes place
inside of the brewery.
I
am looking for people that need judging and non-judging BJCP points.
This comp is sanctioned and points will be
awarded
to those that help. We will also have some light snacks throughout
the day, usually something local and
tasty.
This
is a fun competition with a lot of good people and in my past
experience, some great beers have been entered coming in
from
around the country. Our first year we had beer from at least 5 states
as well as last year. Hand etched glassware
is
awarded to the top 4 entries and many prizes and keepsakes for other
people as well. Our goal here is, of course, to
give
great feedback to those honing their home brewing skills so I always
love to have as many BJCP recognized or above
judges
available.
If
you would like to help out and earn some points, please respond to
this e-mail. I will collect names and judges will
be
picked on a first come first serve basis.Food will be provided as well including meat and vegetarian snacks. :) Approaching almost 100
beers is our goal this year so I hope to get around 20 judges.
Thank
you for your time and Prost!
Cheers,
Jon

Anyone in Eden Prairie who's interested in the water quality, here's the
details.
For years, I've used tap water but run it through a basic whole house
filter. Just received Palmer's book on water and doing some reading.

Subject: [mnbrewers] Upper Mississippi Mash Out entries due by January 17th
Your entries for the Upper Mississippi Mash Out need to be at the drop off
sites by the close of business on the Friday the 17th. See
https://mashout.org. That means shipped packages must arrive by then and
dropped off entries need to get there before the drop off sites close for
the day.
We currently have over 1000 entries in the database but not all those are
paid for. Your entries need to be paid for to reserve a slot in the
competition. Once 1000 entries are paid for the remainder will NOT be able
to be entered into the competition. Remember, you can edit your individual
entry data after you have paid for your entries - you can even move them to
different categories.

Subject: [mba] Bucket-O-Honey
Greetings brewers and mead makers. We have an opportunity to acquire a
decent quantity of honey at a reasonable price and thought it might help
some of you make a batch or two (or three) of mead. Dave Schroeder is
former president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association) and
has honey available in 5 gallon buckets (60 pounds). He will sell honey to
us for $120 per five gallons or approximately $24 per gallon. Ive used his
honey before and know it is high quality. Dave is selling his honey
rapidly and will likely be out of stock by early February. Im not trying
to rush or use force but I really enjoy making mead. You should too.
To keep this a low effort project here is how to proceed.
1. Decide you want a bucket or two
2. Send me a check by January 15 to the address below.
3. Make the check for $120 out to Dave Schroeder.
4. Include phone or e-mail address for pickup confirmation.
5. If you want 1/3 bucket or ½ bucket, buy a bucket and find someone
willing to share.
Any other questions, call or e-mail
The Fine print: I will exchange your check for the honey and will keep it
inside until you arrange for pick up. I am not able to front you for your
bucket-o-honey. Im terribly sorry but I dont tweet, twit, text, or accept
pay-pal. I do not have the ability to split buckets. I cannot read your
mind. If you want a bucket, send me a check.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

I know that many of you are judging for the UMMO on Saturday, January 25th, but if you are attending the Beer Dabbler Winter Carnival, there is a home brew beer contest for ticket holders (one entry per ticket/no entry fee). Entry drop off is from 3:30 - 6:00 pm on January 25th at the Dabbler event. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, and third places in each category. Prizes for Best of Show and Best New Entrant. Registration is at: http://thebeerdabblercontest.info/
I am also looking for people to help out with judging and stewarding on Saturday, February 1st at O'Gara's bar in St. Paul. There will be morning and afternoon judging sessions. This is a BJCP event, but all levels of experience are welcome. Please sign up at: http://thebeerdabblercontest.info/
Thanks! Please email me at: homebrew(a)thebeerdabbler.com with any questions.
Gera Exire LaTour, Organizer
P.S. Because of crazy amounts of spam we got last year, you will need to register again even if you have entered or volunteered previously.
Hey all,
Hope all your holidays have been fun and fruitful! Here is a brief update on the coming month for JAB. After the January meeting's officer elections the new club officers will be meeting to come up with our coming year's events. If anyone has ideas for events or wants to help out by doing a presentation at a meeting please respond here or send me an e-mail at jackofallbrews(a)yahoo.com. The club works because of you members, but we need feedback and folks to help us run things!
January Meeting info:
New member, Eric will spend the evening sharing his knowledge about cask conditioning ales. Cask conditioning is much like bottling, but with a few key differences. The serving mechanism is what gives cask conditioned ales their frothy texture and allows you to taste each ingredient…something you can’t do with bottles or kegs. We’ll cover a little history, some homebrew techniques and of course, tasting. This month, he’ll have a holiday mint chocolate stout to try. CO2 need not attend this meeting, beers will all be hand pulled.

This may be a bit of a trek for some of us, but should be a fun topic and worth the drive!
We are cancelling the scheduled Prohibition field trip on Jan 4 (though you can still go on your own if you want!) I ended up on call that day with my new year's schedule and we haven't had a huge interest. I will work on rescheduling it for Jan sometime.
February meeting will likely be at the Rahr Bierstube again thanks to Chris German...more details as we get closer.

The Mash-Out turns 13 this year. Yes, that's right it's become a snotty
teenager hellbent on making Miley Cyrus look like Mitt Romney. It's getting
a tattoo, a piercing on it's junk, and listening to music you just wouldn't
understand. Jeez get a clue, people!
Right now, we're close to 3/4 full, so get pull yourself out of your new
year's coma and sign up now before it's too late to enter one the nations's
largest, most competitive homebrew competitions.
More info: mashout.org
Deadline is 1/17 and entries are capped at 1000.
And no, Mash-Out won't be taking out the trash. It's too busy texting
pictures of that piercing, which may be infected.
We'll need judges too. We've had to turn away volunteers the last few years,
so sign up early.

Subject: Big News from Pour Decisions Brewing Co.!
Greetings and Happy New Year Pubstitutes!
We have some very exciting news to share. As some of you may know, PDBC has
been contract-brewing for one of the newest Twin Cities breweries, Bent
Brewstillery, for about 12 months. As of New Years Eve, PDBC and Bent
decided to merge our companies under the Bent Brewstillery name. While many
things will be changing (a completely renovated tasting room, the production
of craft spirits, and a broader distribution range), one very important
thing will stay the same. Kristen England will stay on as Head Brewer at
Bent Brewstillery and continue to bring unique and great tasting libations
to the Twin Cities craft beer scene.
The combined brewing and distilling operations, as well as the renovated
taproom, will remain at 1744 Terrace Drive in Roseville under the Bent
Brewstillery name. As part of the new business going forward includes craft
distilling and an updated tasting room, the existing taproom will be closed
for a few weeks. Keep your ears open for the grand re-opening of the
taproom and brewstillery!
For more information on the merger and craft beer/liquor plans of Bent
Brewstillery, please visit Bent's website here:
<http://www.bentbrewstillery.com/pour-decisions-bent-brewstillery-merger/>
http://www.bentbrewstillery.com/pour-decisions-bent-brewstillery-merger/
We will be combining our fan club newsletter database into one master list
and as always, we will not share your email address with anyone. If you
wish to be removed from the Bent Brewstillery monthly newsletter,
unsubscribe options will be included in those future emails.
>From the entire PDBC team, we want to thank you all very much for your
support the past 18 months. We had a blast chatting with many of you at our
tasting room or at the many beer festivals. It was great to be part of the
rapid expansion of craft beer brewed in the Twin Cities, making our cities a
craft beer force to be reckoned with now and in the future!
Cheers!
