Subject: [mba] Bucket-O-Honey
Greetings brewers and mead makers. We have an opportunity to acquire a
decent quantity of honey at a reasonable price and thought it might help
some of you make a batch or two (or three) of mead. Dave Schroeder is
former president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association) and
has honey available in 5 gallon buckets (60 pounds). He will sell honey to
us for $120 per five gallons or approximately $24 per gallon. Ive used his
honey before and know it is high quality. Dave is selling his honey
rapidly and will likely be out of stock by early February. Im not trying
to rush or use force but I really enjoy making mead. You should too.
To keep this a low effort project here is how to proceed.
1. Decide you want a bucket or two
2. Send me a check by January 15 to the address below.
3. Make the check for $120 out to Dave Schroeder.
4. Include phone or e-mail address for pickup confirmation.
5. If you want 1/3 bucket or ½ bucket, buy a bucket and find someone
willing to share.
Any other questions, call or e-mail
The Fine print: I will exchange your check for the honey and will keep it
inside until you arrange for pick up. I am not able to front you for your
bucket-o-honey. Im terribly sorry but I dont tweet, twit, text, or accept
pay-pal. I do not have the ability to split buckets. I cannot read your
mind. If you want a bucket, send me a check.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel

Subject: 16th Annual Domras Cup Mead Competition - Savannah, GA - Feb 1 - a call for Judges & Entries
Hello Southeastern Judges & Mead Judges-
Announcing a call for Judges & Entries for the 16th Annual Domras Cup Mead Competition.
When:
• Competition Date: Saturday, February 1, 2014. 9:00 a.m. Judges/Stewards on site by 8:30 a.m.
• Entry window: January 1, 2014 to January 23, 2014.
Where: Tentative – Savannah Bee Company:
211 Johnny Mercer Blvd, Savannah, GA 31410
on Wilmington Island (unless plans change – a note will be forthcoming if the venue changes)
Post-party and Oyster Roast begins ~ 2:30 p.m. (immediately after BOS meads are judged), ending time is up to you
Why join us?
We can use certified judges and mead aficionados for judging and stewarding. We have a number of local BJCP-certified mead judges, but always need help. For those wanting to learn more about mead judging, this is a great competition
to attend. We’ll try to pair you up with one of our experienced mead judges. Each volunteer will get an etched Domras wine tasting glass and look for some of our new SBL “crimp-less” bottle openers to be available as well. Drawings for a door prize or two
will be in order. Bagels, etc. will be available before we start and snacks in between. Immediately following judging, we hold our epic post-party and oyster roast that is an event not to be missed, so if interested in helping to judge or steward, please sign
up on the registration page and/or email me and come join us. We generally try to finish in one round though a few folks may have to do two small rounds (we strive for no more than 10-12 total meads per judge). BOS will coincide with the beginning of the after-party
with results announced shortly thereafter.
Why enter?
The cost is just $6 per entry. Any size bottle is acceptable (meads will be served “blind” by our experienced stewards to allow for non-standard bottle shipments). We know your mead is a precious thing. You can send any number of
bottles you want, but we do recommend a minimum of one 750ml, two of anything smaller, and two if carbonated to ensure a fresh bottle for the BOS round. Ship early and we will get conditioned quickly so they are ready for competition day. Ribbons and lots
of great mead-centric prizes from the Savannah Bee Company (can you say 100 lbs of regional honey!), commercial meadery products, and Savannah Homebrew Shop will be provided to winners.
At this point we don’t have plans for remote drop-off locations where our club members would pick up. If entries are registered and paid for and at proper condition, however, we can accept the entries the morning of the competition (or better yet on Friday)
if someone is planning to come judge from an outside area. We’ll leave that up to each club to arrange. Just let us know in advance about any special arrangements needed.
For more information please visit the SBL website at

For lodging, there are no hotels on Wilmington Island, which is 6-9 minutes east of downtown Savannah. A cheaper option is the Baymont Inn 2 miles west of downtown. The area is industrial
but the hotel is nice and clean. Here is some info from Trip Advisor:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60814-d563256-Reviews-Baymont_Inn_… . There are nicer (and pricier) hotels downtown in the $150-200 range with easier access to downtown activities. More hotels on Trip

We are only the second longest-running, not nearly the biggest or most prestigious, but we make a claim to be the funnest mead-only competition in the world! Come join us!

Anyone else read in the latest issue of Zymurgy on how this years AHA competition will be lottery style? Interesting idea, should solve a lot of the registration issues, but then again some big home brewers may not even get a chance to enter?
Thoughts?

I will be ordering some agave nectar shortly and have 1 gallon with no taker

really delicious drink.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New hours coming soon for the Summit Beer Hall
Summit Beer Hall will be open on Saturdays in 2014
ST. PAUL, Minn. – (December 19, 2013) – <http://gdbagency.dmanalytics2.com/click?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.summitbrewing.co…> Summit Brewing Company today announces that the Summit Beer Hall & Taproom will be open both Friday and Saturday from 4-9 p.m. starting January 3, 2014.
The Beer Hall has been open for more than a year. In the summer months, the patio is packed; in the winter months, it’s a full house of beer lovers enjoying their favorite Summit year-round and seasonal brews on draught. Craft beer connoisseurs also visit for the specialty one-off beers and firkins that are available exclusively at the Beer Hall.
Because of this positive response, Summit has decided to change the existing hours and add a new day to the Beer Hall schedule. Starting January 3, 2014, the Beer Hall will be open both Friday and Saturday from 4-9 p.m.
These Beer Hall hours will be filled with draught and cask ale, food trucks and special events—just as they have been for the past year. Pints will still be $4 and there will also be a new 7 oz. sampler size available for $2 per glass.
You can see what specialty beers, food trucks and events are scheduled at the <http://gdbagency.dmanalytics2.com/click?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.summitbrewing.co…> Beer Hall & Taproom Page of the Summit website.

Subject: [mnbrewers] Craft Beer for the Homebrewer
A very long while ago I polled the group about recipes members most wanted from commercial breweries. It was for a book I was working on called Craft Beer for the Homebrewer. The book is finally coming out. It shipped from the publisher's warehouse yesterday and should be out there soon.
The book includes nearly 40 homebrew-scaled recipes for commercial beers provided by the brewers who make them. There are recipes from local favorites like Schell's, Surly, and Dave's Brewfarm. Other contributors include The Bruery, Cigar City, Shmaltz, Epic, Lagunitas, and others. There are lots of pro-brewers tips and profiles of every brewery. Recipes are written as both extract and all-grain. The book is full of color images and looks pretty awesome.

All,
I have decided to get into kegging and I'm looking for 2 kegs local if anyone knows where I might be able to acquire any or would lime to part with 2 that you have sitting in your basement. I'm watching craigslist, but as you know they don't show up there very often. I would prefer to stay in the $35-40 per keg range. I really don't want to spend $100 or more for new ones :(
Thanks,
Garret
Hey all,
Here are details on the Mash Out!

On Thursday, December 12, 2013 4:33 PM, 2014 Mashout <webmaster(a)mashout.org> wrote:
It's almost about Mashout time again!
Yup, it's our lucky thirteenth competition and we're getting ready for another awesome Mashout!
The most different part of the UMMO this year is our focus on Giving Back. Our very dear friend Kathy Stock was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this fall. Every penny of the proceeds of the UMMO will go to her, for anything she needs or bills ... personally we hope she buggers off to Vegas and makes a mint!
For you volunteers, and if you aren't one you really gotta get on board, the judging will be at Grumpys-Roseville again as its a great place with killer beer and food. We'll be doing a lot of the really cool stuff we always do...plus a few new angles. You'll be wined and dined like no other competition in the nation plus your standard commemorative beer and glass.
We'll have lunchtime speakers, again, for your enjoyment. For Friday and Saturday lunch, Michael Dawson, brand manager at Wyeast will be giving two different talks on the Friday and Saturday.
The massively popular Friday night Piss-up will be back and better than ever. Bring your wackest, dopest, dirty or funky commercial beers possible. Sour, risqu and so on. There will be some stuff a lot of you guys have never tried before! As always, the ever awesome Cellar beer event will be the hallmark of the evening.
Finally, the banquet is always a great time. Last year we were full and seats, again, are sure to sell out quickly so get your tickets ASAP. You again get a commemorative glass, meal, beers and the debauchery that follows.
So, what are the important dates?
- Registration opens on 13 December.
- Dropoff begins on 27 December.
- Registration and dropoff end on 17 January.
- The Mashout happens on 24 and 25 January.
- The banquet happens the evening of the 25 January.
So, just like the election, enter early and enter often! We cap out entries at 1,000 and we've hit that in previous years.
See you there!
