Subject: [mba] Bucket-O-Honey
Greetings brewers and mead makers. We have an opportunity to acquire a
decent quantity of honey at a reasonable price and thought it might help
some of you make a batch or two (or three) of mead. Dave Schroeder is
former president of the MHBA (Minnesota Hobby Beekeepers Association) and
has honey available in 5 gallon buckets (60 pounds). He will sell honey to
us for $120 per five gallons or approximately $24 per gallon. Ive used his
honey before and know it is high quality. Dave is selling his honey
rapidly and will likely be out of stock by early February. Im not trying
to rush or use force but I really enjoy making mead. You should too.
To keep this a low effort project here is how to proceed.
1. Decide you want a bucket or two
2. Send me a check by January 15 to the address below.
3. Make the check for $120 out to Dave Schroeder.
4. Include phone or e-mail address for pickup confirmation.
5. If you want 1/3 bucket or ½ bucket, buy a bucket and find someone
willing to share.
Any other questions, call or e-mail
The Fine print: I will exchange your check for the honey and will keep it
inside until you arrange for pick up. I am not able to front you for your
bucket-o-honey. Im terribly sorry but I dont tweet, twit, text, or accept
pay-pal. I do not have the ability to split buckets. I cannot read your
mind. If you want a bucket, send me a check.
Sincerely,
Rick Oftel
MHBA Previous officer and general nice guy.

> Subject: [mba] Dec. 11 brewing community fundraiser for Kathy Stock
>
> Some of you may have heard that Kathy Stock, longtime volunteer at homebrew contests and co-brewer with husband Curt of some of the finest homebrew ever produced in this state, is battling brain cancer. The local homebrewing community is working with Kathy’s workplace on a fundraiser that is coming up on Dec. 11, from 5-9, and the Czech hall on West Seventh that has been a venue for many MHBA meetings.
>
> The party will have a goodwill offering, a silent auction and, of course, plenty of homebrew and donated commercial brews. We’re working to set up a PayPal site so that people who can’t be there but want to donate can do so. So, please come, do some bidding. If anyone wants to donate something for the auction, let me know. Likewise, if anyone wants to help with communications or other support, just let me know. PLEASE, help get out this information to other clubs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
>
> Kathy’s boss, Jon Carlson, provided a very nice invitation that I will simply reproduce, because I can’t say it any better:
>
> As many of you know, Kathy Stock, a 12-year veteran of Braun Intertec and valued member of the Braun Intertec family was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year. During the past several weeks, Kathy has undergone an intensive series of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Please join me by extending your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for Kathy, and for strength for her and her husband, Curt, as they navigate this difficult journey.
>
> To support Kathy and her family during this difficult time, we are working with her family and friends to organize a benefit to take place on December 11 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm .
>
> • Free beer (donations from Kathy and Curt’s home-brewing buddies – Yum!)
> • Free soda and water (some planned donations)
> • Some free appetizers (some planned donations)
> • Potluck (feel free to bring a dish to share)
> • Silent Auction – many fantastic items have been donated already, and we are happy to accept more (see contact info below)
> • Music (live and recorded)
>
> The doors will open at 5:00 pm and the silent auction will conclude at 8:00 pm, with the winners announced immediately following. You do not need to be present to win.
>
> The benefit will be held at:
> Czech-Slovak Protective Society (CSPS) Hall
> 383 W Michigan St, St Paul, MN 55102
> (northwest corner of W. Michigan St. and W. 7th Street)
>
> Our hope is that through this benefit and silent auction, we can raise money to help with the medical bills and other financial stresses that accompany a serious illness. Please join us in this effort to help make life a little easier for Kathy and her loved ones during this difficult time.

Hey all,
This is just a reminder about the JAB Holiday party. This will be on our usual meeting night (Friday Dec 13th) starting around 6:30. My place 1966 Fountain Lane, Waconia. No official business at this meeting and we encourage spouses to come along. This has traditionally been a pot luck, so bring some sort of food item to share if you can!
We also do a gift exchange at this meeting. Bring a wrapped/bagged beer gift to add to the pile and we will randomly give out the gifts...so bring something you would want to get (not a crappy white elephant gift!) If your spouse wants to take part--bring two gifts! I already have mine picked out!
Also we are going to be down a couple of officers this year (Losing Tim to the professional side of things, and Bryce to baby stuff) You know how it goes! So I really want to get some new blood into the officer positions--please contact me if you are interested in helping the club out. We usually meet a few times a year to plan special events, upcoming meeting topics and just drink some rare beers--not a huge amount of time required. If no one volunteers I'll have to start "Hey You'ing" people into it!
See you soon,
--Eric
I have a few seats left for the BJCP Tasting Exam that is being held on Sunday, November 17th starting at 9 am. The test site is in Minneapolis. Please email me privately if you are interested.

Subject: Vita.mn media alert: Ultimate Minnesota six-pack named
Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2013 22:42:57 +0000
Vita.mn cracks open its annual beer issue on Thursday, Nov. 7, unveiling the first-ever “Vita.mn Six-Pack.” The Six-Pack is Vita.mn’s Minnesota beer Hall of Fame, honoring the most iconic beers currently being brewed in the state.
Here’s how the Vita.mn Six-Pack was selected:
· More than 1,200 readers voted in Vita.mn’s six-day, bracket-style contest to determine which of 32 Minnesota beers is the greatest in the state. The reader’s pick is included in the Vita.mn Six-Pack.
· A panel of Minnesota beer experts gathered at a secure, undisclosed brewpub to decide the other five beers. Participants included The Growler editor Joe Alton, Minnesota’s first certified cicerone (Google it) Michael Agnew, beer judge Gera Exire La Tour, beer historian and author of Land of Amber Waters: The History of Brewing in Minnesota Doug Hoverson, beer blogger Andrew Schmitt and Vita.mn beer writer Michael Rietmulder.
Criteria for the final selection included taste (Is this beer a clear standout for its style, either a unique genre-bender or an exemplary purebred?), significance (Is it a trailblazer? Did it bring something new to our scene? Can we sense its influence?), and retail availability.
What beers made the Vita.mn Six-Pack?
Pick up the Vita.mn beer issue on racks throughout the metro on Thursday, or find out outline at www.vita.mn. Here’s a hint: All of the beers in the Vita.mn Six-Pack can be found throughout the Twin Cities—with one highly desirable exception.
Want to get your hands on a Vita.mn Six-Pack?
Vita.mn has partnered with Zipp’s Liquors at 2618 E. Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis to make the complete Vita.mn Six-Pack available for sale for a limited time starting Thursday, November 7 at noon. The Vita.mn Six-Pack will be specially priced at $12.99 (10% off retail).

I have a very limited number of seats available for the Sunday, November 17th and the Sunday, December 15th BJCP Tasting Exam. I would prefer that these go to people who are interested in retaking the exam, since I know it is often difficult to get a seat. Retakes are $15. The exams will both be held at the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis starting at 9 am.
If you are interested, please send me a private email at: crankycat(a)gmail.com
Thanks.

Judges,
On Feb. 22nd we will be hosting our 3rd annual Lucette Winter Home Brew Competition! My name is
Jon Christiansen and I will, again, be the organizer of this home brew competition. I have hosted a variety
of beer competitions and this one is slowly gaining popularity. Last year we had just under 50 entries and
we hope to get closer to 100 this year. The judging all takes place inside of the brewery.
I am looking for people that need judging and non-judging BJCP points. This comp is sanctioned and points will be
awarded to those that help. We will also have some light snacks throughout the day, usually something local and
tasty.
This is a fun competition with a lot of good people and in my past experience, some great beers have been entered coming in
from around the country. Our first year we had beer from at least 5 states as well as last year. Hand etched glassware
is awarded to the top 4 entries and many prizes and keepsakes for other people as well. Our goal here is, of course, to
give great feedback to those honing their home brewing skills so I always love to have as many BJCP recognized or above
judges available.
If you would like to help out and earn some points, please respond to this e-mail. I will collect names and judges will
be picked on a first come first serve basis. Approaching almost 100 beers is our goal this year so I hope to get around 20 judges.
Thank you for your time and Prost!
Cheers,
Jon Christiansen
